        Sustainability - Castelfalfi

Castelfalfi - an example of sustainable tourism

The example of Castelfalfi illustrates how sustainable tourism can positively influence a whole region. The Hotel Il Castelfalfi - TUI BLUE SELECTION, as part of the Toscana Resort Castelfalfi, contributes significantly to this development. Learn how TUI breathed new life into an almost extinct village.

Ten years ago, the medieval village of Castelfalfi in Tuscany made for a sad image. It was almost deserted and most of the buildings were dilapidated. TUI bought the village, including the estate, to turn it into a high-quality tourist resort. The small village, including a castle and estate, between Pisa, Florence, and Siena is now - after many years of careful restoration - a magnet for connoisseurs, golfers, and explorers. Castelfalfi has preserved its original appearance and medieval character and contributes to the sustainable development of the region.

        Sustainable Construction

With mostly locally sourced materials, we've rebuilt and restored Castelfalfi - always with an eye for energy efficiency. Il Castelfalfi has received the particularly stringent "Casa Clima - A Class" certification. The heating and cooling of the hotel, as well as the entire town centre of Castelfalfi, is also provided by a biomass cogeneration plant. It recycles pellets that are by-products of local agriculture and forestry. At more distant properties, solar panels provide hot water.

        Organic Wine and Olive Growing

Wine and olives are a tradition on the 1,000-hectare estate. A few years ago, TUI planted additional vines that are cultivated purely organically and without the use of chemicals. The winery produces up to 40,000 bottles of wine every year, mainly for the Toscana Resort Castelfalfi itself, but also for dealers in Italy and abroad. Castelfalfi isn't just winning its guests over with the red and white wines, but also its own, excellent olive oil. Like the wine, the olives come from organic farming in the hills around the Hotel Il Castelfalfi. The annual 35,000 litres of cold-pressed olive oil refine the typical local dishes in the restaurants at the Toscana Resort Castelfalfi. The olive oil is much sought after as a souvenir. The resort offers tours and visits to the estate, wine and olive oil production, and tastings.

Castelfalfi as an Employer and Venue

Over the past few years, Castelfalfi has become the largest employer in the region with 200 employees. Another 300 people outside the resort also benefit from cooperations, such as laundries and other service providers. Cultural events in the summer season enrich the local life and attract visitors from near and far. A real win for both holidaymakers and locals!
