Sustainability at TUI BLUE — for people and the environment

Our planet's resources are limited, and therefore it's our responsibility to conserve them. At TUI BLUE, we take sustainability seriously. We're not only committed to protecting the environment — we also care for the well-being of people and animals in and around our hotels.

In order to continue to lead the tourism industry in terms of sustainability, the TUI Sustainability Agenda was launched, which of course also applies to TUI BLUE. We see tourism as a positive force for good while being aware of our impact.

Our sustainability priorities at TUI BLUE hotels

Buy locally: We rely heavily on local sourcing to strengthen our connections with suppliers in each of our destinations. As a result, we also open up new sources of income for the local community.
Use a circular business model: We are moving to a circular business model by redesigning products, services and processes. First and foremost, we focus on avoiding food waste and plastic.
Reduce emissions: We implement science-based targets to reduce our emissions. Our plans are clearly aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Empower consumers: We enable our guests to make more sustainable choices during every stage of their journey.

Use green and clean energy sources: Our hotels are powered by renewable energy. We create environmentally friendly transportation options with low emissions in target areas.
Drive social and environmental standards through certification: We work with certification bodies to improve social and environmental standards and implement industry-leading standards for our owned hotel new builds and renovations.
Implement green tech and data-driven approaches: We reduce the environmental impact of our IT platforms, use data to improve decisions and transparency, and use technology for transformation.
Promote upskilling: With the TUI Sustainability Academy we're helping to close the gap in sustainability skills in the tourism industry.

The 'Green & Fair Hotels' label

You'll notice that a bunch of our hotels proudly display the 'Green & Fair Hotels' label. This label is only granted to hotels that have been fully certified by an independent organisation and meet the standards of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. A hotel seeking this sustainable certification must meet a detailed list of requirements including (but not limited to) the environmentally friendly disposal of waste water, the use of renewable energy, the appropriate remuneration of employees and support for the preservation of local culture.

Hotels with the Green & Fair Hotels' label are therefore particularly characterised by sustainable management, the responsible use of resources, the use of local and regional suppliers and other sustainable practices.

Our hotels are actively bringing sustainability to life in a variety of ways — have a look below to see how.

TUI BLUE Sylt

We promote sustainable mobility on Sylt in Germany by expanding the island's electric vehicle charging infrastructure. With 18 new charging points at nine stations, accessible via the TUI eCharge app, we offer a convenient charging option. Our guests enjoy attractive rates, and the stations are publicly accessible, contributing to Sylt's climate-friendly development.

We are committed to sustainable mobility on Sylt and have expanded the island's charging infrastructure. We installed 18 charging points at nine stations, all conveniently accessible through the TUI eCharge app – one app for all charging points.

Guests at TUI BLUE Sylt benefit from exclusive rates, and the charging stations are also available to the public. This project supports Sylt's e-mobility strategy and significantly contributes to the region's climate-friendly development.

TUI BLUE Palm Garden

One of our sustainabilty success stories is the exciting pilot project at TUI BLUE Palm Garden where we use KITRO cameras to effectively monitor and reduce food waste by up to 60%, in addition to the installation of 60 solar panels to heat water and decrease the hotel's carbon footprint.

One of our sustainabilty success stories is the exciting pilot project at TUI BLUE Palm Garden where we use KITRO cameras to weight, monitor and track waste. KITRO stands for “Kitchen” and “Hero” and is a groundbreaking solution that uses artificial intelligence to reduce food waste in restaurants, hotels and canteens by up to 60 percent.

Our KITRO garbage cans are equipped with precision scales and cameras . Every time food waste is disposed of, the camera takes a photo. This data is then analyzed by our innovative software to provide accurate information about the amount and type of food wasted. Best of all, this system saves staff from manual data entry and the results are conveniently displayed in a clear dashboard.

In addition to this project, TUI BLUE Palm Garden has also installed 60 solar panels to heat the hotel's water and reduce our carbon footprint.

TUI BLUE Sarigerme Park

The TUI BLUE Sarigerme Park hotel in Türkiye adopts sustainable practices by repurposing leftover bottled water for gardening and maintaining an extensive olive and lemon tree garden, yielding a significant olive oil production.

Our TUI BLUE Sarigerme Park hotel in Türkiye collects bottled water that guests leave behind in the hotel's general areas or in the rooms and uses it for gardening.

They've also planted new trees in the hotel garden. The hotel grounds are home to 224 fully-grown olive trees and 407 new sapling olive trees. They also have three mature lemon trees and 38 newly planted lemon tree seedlings. In 2022 the hotel collected 793 litres of olive oil from 5,407 kg of olives.

TUI BLUE Seno

TUI BLUE Seno demonstrates its commitment to biodiversity preservation and sustainability by protecting ecosystems, reducing its carbon footprint, utilising eco-friendly waste management, and supporting the local community.

In order to perserve and contribute to the development of biodiversity in the region, TUI BLUE Seno protects all living things such as plants and animals in the facility, including the ecosystems they form and the areas in which they live.

To actively shape a sustainable future, measures are taken to record, monitor, report on and reduce the carbon footprint. For example, TUI BLUE Seno processes vegetable and fruit waste from kitchen production together with garden waste into compost. Care is also taken to ensure that the pesticides and fertilizers used for the garden are environmentally friendly.

No chlorine is used in the "Oasis Pool" — instead there is a system for producing salt chlorine (salt chlorine generator).

When purchasing new equipment, care is taken to save water and energy. To prevent heat loss, inspections are carried out once a year throughout the entire facility using thermal imaging cameras. Weekly environmental cleanings and public beach cleanings are also carried out.

Social commitment

Our TUI BLUE Seno hotel procures its goods and services from regional companies, with the exception of central procurement. 37 percent are already local companies.

TUI BLUE Seno supports vocational schools and vocational high schools with an internship policy to support their vocational training. Interns are also hired at a fixed rate.

In addition, TUI BLUE Seno donates mattresses and box-spring beds from the hotel to those in need through the district office. Animal shelters in the region are supported by the donation of equipment and materials that are no longer needed in the hotel.

Contributions to the TUI Care Foundation

For each adult guest staying at one of our Green & Fair Hotels, TUI donates €1 to the TUI Care Foundation (and 50 cents for each child).

Sustainability Certifications

At TUI BLUE, our hotels and hotel partners are expected to achieve a sustainability certification from an independent organisation. This process involves a third-party assessment to certify that the hotel complies with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Criteria, demonstrating social and environmental good practice.

We maintain our focus on certification as an effective tool to raise the sustainability bar across the industry, as well as work with industry standards to strengthen their sustainability criteria and roll out higher standards for our own hotels.
